FARAGEL 2005  FOUNDATION

Objectives:

The goal of this Foundation is to help women and adolescents have access to the resources that they need to become self-sustaining in the Cove community.

Poverty and Hunger

Typically, it is difficult for the people from the Cove community to have enough security to access bank loans.  This makes it difficult for them to start reasonably small businesses that are financially stable.  Therefore lack of income can cause extreme poverty and lack of basic education amongst the population.  Lack of skills and funds contribute to the mismanagement of land use and hence cause the land to become barren.  The situation is aggravated during the dry seasons.

 Basic Education

Because of poverty, many families do not have the source of income that can help them support their children educations. Long distance combined with poor roads makes it difficult for many of them to develop the desire to go to the next town for schooling.

Literature/Library

The community does not have any kind of literature to broaden their knowledge.  Knowledge is passed on through storytelling. The community is isolated from the outside world.  The distribution of Bibles and the reinforcement of Bible study groups could serve as a foundation for the creation of a library

Gender Equality

Women’s rights are limited. Women are usually denied inheritance rights. Most families prefer sending boys rather than girls to schools.

Micro-Funding

Lack of resources makes it difficult for the people of the Cove community to borrow funds from the few banks that we have. As a result of this, about 50 people formed themselves into self-help association called “Club Gbenonkpo”.

Every week, each member of the association contribute one or two dollars and the amount collected is given to a member of the association so he or she can start a small local business, or reinforce one he or she has already started.
